Overcome Addiction - Recovery Groups |
I believe that drug or alcohol addiction is an individual choice that is made to mask
underlying emotional trauma. Therefore, even if an individual is receiving group support
there is no escaping the journey of going within ones self, which entails confronting the
root cause and making a choice that doesn’t involve habitual behavior. Now let me say,
that with the best of intentions support groups usually create an environment
which often cause an individual to wallow in their own wounds or victimization. This in
fact causes the individual to contract what I like to call wounditis,
which makes it extremely difficult for the person to move past the shame, guilt, and
emotional trauma they have endured. I believe that the groups focus should be on
teaching spiritual growth and not on the wounds of addiction. In other words, I believe
that a group program could best be used to teach spiritual growth and to assist people in
making a personal connection with God while supporting a life of service to our fellow
man. However, the group’s efforts would best be applied only if and when the individual
first confronts the root cause.
