Overcome Addiction -One Root Cause

There has been much controversy surrounding the cause of addiction, and up until now no one, I repeat no one has had the intestinal fortitude to link addiction to one root cause. Well, consider it done because that is exactly what I aim to do! There has been quite the debacle and a governmental hullabaloo over the brain disease model, which has been adopted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Despite the fact that research has proven alcohol and drugs to be mind altering substances, there is no clinical proof that can conclusively label brain disease as being the cause of addiction. With over sixty five percent of the American public medicating themselves with prescription drugs, we seem quite steadfast in manufacturing new ones. Now, I am not disputing the fact that sometimes prescription medications are necessary, and help restore many people to optimal health. However, we are quickly becoming a medicated society! Furthermore, this conjecture can not be tied to all of the other types of addictions that exist, such as food, gambling, sexual and shopping to name a few. Surely these addictive behaviors do not chemically alter the brain! Many proponents of the disease model would have you believe that a food addiction is the result of the individual being addicted to the chemical substances in the food! Even if this were true, which it is not, this theory does not explain why some choose a gambling, shopping or sexual addiction! Would the same proponents have us believe that there is a chemical substance in the lever of the slot machine that addicts the compulsive gambler, or that there is a chemical substance in the local mall that addicts the compulsive shopper? According to Stanton Peele, “7 Tools to Beat Addiction” Alan Leshner (NIDA) President, 1994-2001 stated; More and more people have been thinking that contrary to earlier views there is a commonality between substance abuse addictions and other compulsions. This statement does not at all represent the current views of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which is exclusively branded to the brain disease model. However, it does represent mine! There is a commonality or a Square Root of Addiction in every self destructive, compulsive behavior, which is the need to MASK THE PAIN OF UNDERLYING EMOTIONAL SCARS CAUSED BY FAMILY DYSFUNCTION. That’s it, plain and simple! Addiction is not a complex incurable brain disease, it is a choice! And, if you understand why you made that choice in the first place, you can make another choice not to!
