Overcome Shopping Addiction |
|
For many people, shopping means new clothes for work or maybe odds and ends for the house. For others, however, shopping takes on an entirely different meaning. It can become as destructive as any other addiction and result in a financial nightmare for the shopper and family alike. This is referred to as compulsive shopping.
Compulsive shopping and spending are defined as excessive and out of control. As with other addictions, the person continues to spend and shop in the face of adverse consequences. Sometimes referred to as "shopoholism," compulsive shopping can create massive financial, marital, legal and family problems. The consequences are identical in nature to the consequences created from drug or alcohol addictions.
However, once again, as with all compulsions the chemical dependency theory is missing.
So, what causes someone to shop at the expense of financial devastation?
Choosing an addiction is a matter of learning a behavior from friends, family or surroundings. When the compulsive shopper figures out that shopping makes them feel better, happier, and it removes their emotional pain the addiction begins. It is an escape from the reality of emotional pain and trauma created by family dysfunction.
So, the key to responsible shopping is to uncover why compulsive shopping makes you happier, and what emotional pain does it temporarily remove.
