Overcome Addiction - Trading One Mask for Another |
The root cause of addiction is the need to mask underlying pain of emotional scars caused
by family dysfunction, and to eradicate this behavior you must uncover and confront the
family dysfunction that has caused the pain in the first place. When someone turns to self
destructive habitual behavior essentially what they are doing is wearing a mask to avoid
dealing with the real pain. Therefore, if one were to switch masks they are merely
choosing a different vehicle to once again hide the real pain. This type of behavior
usually shows up as being obsessive compulsive and while it may not have as many
debilitating effects as wearing the addiction mask, the individual is not living true to
themselves. In other words they are living a falsehood. When examining the concept of
mask trading one might concur that as long as the person is no longer addicted then why
should it really matter? While this statement may have a small amount of validity to its
conjecture, the real problem is the potential for relapse. If the individual does not choose
to confront their family dysfunction the emotional pain will surface again, and make no mistake each
time this occurs it becomes progressively worse. Each time the message gets louder and
louder, which either causes the person to relapse or to choose a different mask that will
do the job of covering up the pain!
